Initiative for Fast & Fair Renewables & Grids
European consensus on basic principles for fast and fair renewable energies and grids
The Fast and Fair Renewables and Grids initiative, led by ICLEI, brings together local authorities, civil society, renewable energy associations and energy communities across Europe. Together, they have developed baseline principles for the rapid and fair expansion of renewables and grids that involve local authorities and citizens more closely and address the causes of local resistance:
- Principle 1 ‘Local projects – local influence’
- Principle 2 ‘Local projects – local value’
- Principle 3 ‘Transparency’
- Principle 4: ‘Nature-positive’ principle
- Principle 5: ‘Strengthening community-led initiatives’
Transformati.on 2050 was involved in developing the baseline principles in order to incorporate the perspectives of municipalities and the local population and to strengthen local value creation. The consensus on the fast and fair expansion of renewable energies is an important step towards a just energy transition – but it must be supplemented by binding legal participation standards.
Building on this, Transformati.on 2050 is working to transfer the European baseline principles to the German context. A workshop in Stendal in June 2025 marked the start of the development of nationwide guidelines for a fast and fair energy transition.
